5 Stars Love this cookbook.
We are trying to cut back on fat and salt and this cookbook certainly is helping. I love one dish meals and always look for cookbooks that help me with that. This book is a great addition to my collection.

4 Stars Easy as pie, although I’ve never baked a pie.
I hate to cook, consequently I’m not very good at it. This book seemed to understand that and made it seem as if I do know how to cook. The receipes are easy and quick.

4 Stars Great Cook Book…One Pot Meals So Easy!
This is a great cook book. How simple can it be to put every thing in to one pot? Lots of “real food” type recipies in this book as well. I believe this is a great cook book for anyone trying to cut back on fat etc…heathly meals for the entire family.

4 Stars One Pot Meals
Practical and easy to fix meals. Good ideas for meals using every day food items.

5 Stars You don’t need to have Diabetes to love this book.
This is my favorite new cookbook in 20 years. Now, to be totally fair, I’m not much of a cookbook kind of gal. I have a handful of family recipes I usually rotate through without having them written down, and I never cared much for cooking or eating in the first place. I have spent the last two months, though, trying out a large sampling of the recipes in this book, and the whole family loves them. I really like one-pot-meals because I get flustered trying to time too many different pots and pans at once, with a pesky toddler getting into the clean dishes, and older kids asking for help with homework. These recipes are clear and easy and extremely delicious. I can get them done in a very reasonable amount of time. The flavors, variety, and ease of preparation can’t be beat. And I love the nutritional breakdown; easy to use, even for those of us new to the nutritional needs of a type I diabetic.

An estimated sixteen million Americans have prediabetes, a condition that often leads to full-blown diabetes—and nearly one million Americans will be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in the next year. But everyone at risk can take simple steps to help reduce the chances of developing the condition. Stop Diabetes offers fifty essential, informative ideas for what you can do today, no matter what your age—whether you have prediabetes, a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, grandparents, or an aunt with the condition, a severe weight problem, or are a member of an ethnic group at high risk—including Hispanics, Native Americans, African Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Diabetes expert Gretchen Becker’s sensible, inspiring ideas, each presented with a clear rationale, include: • Learn your heritage • Go easy on the fruit juice • Learn about the glycemic index • Go window shopping (any kind of walking helps).

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Gretchen Becker does it again: a wonderful, helpful book
This book contains everything you need to know about current research and medical advice on preventing type II diabetes (if possible) or at least putting it off for as long as possible if you are genetically ‘destined’ for diabetes.

With tremendous warmth, humor and intelligence, Ms. Becker gives the reader common sense suggestions that really work. It’s like having a really wise friend sit down over a cup of tea and explain it all to you in words you can understand, with suggestions you will actually enjoy following. I wish someone could have handed me this book a long time ago. If I could have know what she teaches now 15 years ago, perhaps I wouldn’t be battling the early stages of type II!

Anyone with a family history of diabetes, a personal history of gestational diabetes or obesity, a genetic heritage ‘prone’ to type II, etc. really should read this book. Doctors and clinics in the U.S. are finally beginning to become proactive with those prone to type II diabetes. After all, the country and most of the industrialized world is in the middle of a type II diabetes pandemic! I hope they start handing Gretchen Becker’s book out to everyone who fits the pre-diabetes profile.

She covers everything from learning about the glycemic index, to making movement playful and fun (instead of a `have to do it’ grind), to turning yourself into a health-conscious, taste-aware, trend-setting gourmet. There are very few of us who would not benefit from eating less while enjoying it more! She explains how to get started without beating yourself up or becoming a martyr to deprivation.

Bravo!

1 Star revised review
These are revised remarks since my comments about “Prediabetes” and “Stop Diabetes” being the same book. I got them both and felt somewhat duped.

Gretchen did contact me to explain the Prediabetes is a second edition of Stop Diabetes. I wish it said that on the cover.

The book(s) info about stopping the progression of diabetes is great, so I do recommend either of these books. It is well written in a style that’s easy to understand. Just don’t get both books; they’re essentially identical.

“Practical and on-target advice.”-Marion J. Franz, M.S., R.D., C.D.E.”Practical nutrition information with powerful health implications. . . . Carolyn Leontos takes readers by the hand and leads them step by step toward the goal of good blood glucose control.”-Patti Geil, M.S., R.D., F.A.D.A., C.D.E. From the moment you or a loved one is diagnosed with diabetes, immediate changes must be incorporated into your diet because what you eat-and how you prepare what you eat-has a great impact on the progression of the disease. What to Eat When You Get Diabetes begins from that very first moment of diagnosis, acquainting you with the types of foods and meal plans ideal for people with diabetes. But as Carolyn Leontos explains, you don’t have to give up your favorite foods to control-or prevent-diabetes. In this practical and reassuring resource, Leontos shows you that a diet for people with diabetes can be filled with satisfying, delicious dishes. Drawing on her extensive experience as a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, she combines satisfying menu suggestions, sample meal plans and recipes, and ideas on how to modify your favorite recipes with the personal stories of people living healthily with diabetes. She also addresses such confusing issues as weight loss, meal plans, calories, portion sizes, eating in restaurants, vitamins, and effectively balancing food and medication. You will discover:
* Why you don’t have to give up your favorite foods
* The truth about saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated fats-and trans fatty acids
* What constitutes a balanced meal
* What to order in restaurants
* Why fat is important-and why you shouldn’t eliminate it from your diet

What to Eat When You Get Diabetes takes the mystery out of good nutrition-and shows you how healthy eating can help you achieve lifelong wellness.

5 Stars Not just for the newly diagnosed
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes nearly 10 years ago. And I found this book very useful and practical. Medical understanding of diabetes is always changing, and this book is a good update for me on the nutritional end. It’s even helped me win a couple of arguments with a nurse who is “close” to me, but hasn’t studied diabetes since nursing school! Excellent value, and I’ve recommended it to the nutritionist with whom I work.

5 Stars Voice Of Reason And Hope
Whether you’ve just been told you have diabetes or have lived with it for years, there is something for you here. The writing style is easy to understand, and the ideas are reasonable and practical. There is a lot of good information here, and it is presented in a style that felt like I was connecting with a person, a friendly dietician who understood my confusion and frustration. The author recognizes the fact that people will need time to make changes and helps diabetics find a food plan that they can use with the whole family without agonized screams about serving cottage cheese and carrot sticks for dinner. I’ve bought other books that are either too academic or have meal suggestions that I’d never use. After using some of the ideas in this book, I was able to get my glucose levels into the normal range without too much trouble or eating food I don’t like. I also lost 15 pounds to boot without really trying.

5 Stars Practical Plan for Diabetics and Overweights
This small book serves the average person whether diabetic or one who needs to shed pounds. It is very easy to read with many suggestions to modify recipes. Sometimes humorous, always practical and down to earth, it’s helpful to all readers. The book is a guide to changing your eating life style without giving up your favorite foods. Whether your tastes are simple or gourmet, suggestions are given to change your eating habits. Enjoyable reading.

5 Stars No gloom and doom here!
As a recently diagnosed Type 2 diabetic, I am looking for lots of information on how to manage the disease in a healthy, positive manner. This book has really helped me. Author Leontos clearly explains the challenges in store but emphasizes positive ways to react. I particularly like her information on modifying recipes. This book is a real bargain for all the help you get!
